Bring your creativity to life

Composition in Photography: I have decided to publish a series of articles through which I’d cover important aspects and elements of composition in photography.  Think of it as a “back to basics” in order to advance better. Strong foundations, just like in building construction, are key to further your photography and take it to the next level.  To begin with, I always tell people to look at “rules” as guidelines rather than anything too serious. Rules should never stop you experimenting and exploring beyond them.  Too many rules kill creativity. Photography composition can be broadly described as how everything in a photograph is “balanced”, how things flow, how every element fits and interacts with the rest in terms of colour, textures, lines, focus, contrast… Good composition will result in a good photo provided the chosen subject and concept behind the image are good too. This is a fairly wide subject which also has slight variations depending on the genre of photography you shoot.

Capturing Pet Moments To Captivate Hearts

Image
Your pets are the cutest, and of course you want photos of them to post online or just have around the house!  However, whether they stay still or bounce around, pets are a tricky subject for photography. You have to work with the pet to get them to look at the camera, and you have to be quick when you're taking photos! Hold the camera out to the animal for a good sniff. Anytime an animal sees something new, it's going to be curious, especially cats. Let the animal take a moment to give the camera a good sniff all over, so they will be less likely to do so in the middle of your photo shoot. If you're not photographing your own pet, let the animal give you a good sniff as well, so they are more comfortable in the session. Natural light is great for any photography, and pet photography is no exception.  Get them used to the flash and shutter sound. Sometimes, the flash will freeze an animal in place for a second, which can be good if you're trying to get a still shot. How

What is culture in Maple Ridge? Culture embraces what defines us as a community and begins with our unique sense of place and identity, going beyond the arts and programming. Culture is who we are and how we live. Maple Ridge is a rapidly evolving and growing ‘edge city’ with a strong community aspiration to preserve, celebrate and leverage our rural and agricultural heritage. Surrounded by natural beauty and incredible mountain vistas, we are known for our small town atmosphere that celebrates a full range of outdoor culture, arts and heritage. Maple Ridge has a dynamic arts, photography, theatre and culture scene. They offer a wealth of opportunities to immerse yourself with new ideas, explore new points of view and maybe even change your outlook on life. The arts represent an outlet of expression that is usually influenced by culture and which in turn helps to change culture. As such, the arts are a physical manifestation of the internal creative impulse. Major constituents of the a

Nature and Art Photography  What feeds my heart and my art are the untouched, open spaces in nature. These are places where I find respite and restoration and feels connected to something larger than myself. The open space that encourages me to breathe deeply, look closely and listen intently to the roar of the ocean or the silence of the forest; the natural landscapes that speak of ever changing seasons and reminds me of our own cycles that are part of this ongoing, remarkable transformation.  I seek places like this every day as I hike our coast line and mountain trails, capturing photographs of our beautiful British Columbia terrain and bringing them back to my studio as inspiration for my art.  It is my hope that these images will carry you away for a time… and in that moment, you will catch a glimpse of the mystery and magic and peace inside yourself.

Adding moments of life in photography

There are essentially four approaches that can be taken in photographic portraiture — the constructionist, environmental, candid, and creative approach.  Each has been used over time for different reasons be they technical, artistic or cultural. The constructionist approach is when the photographer in their portraiture constructs an idea around the portrait — happy family, romantic couple, trustworthy executive. It is the approach used in most studio and social photography. Shooting Full Body Portraits Full body portraits involve a lot more work than when you are photographing just the head and the shoulders. Why? Because when you incorporate the full body in your imagery, you have to focus on posing your model, choosing the right lens, the right camera angle, use more light and spend more time setting things up. Posing: In full body portraits positioning of the hands become important. Most people don’t have modeling experience (and that’s 90% of the people you will ever photograph),

Adding Light on your Life

Image
Without any natural light available, a photographer must rely on the existing light in the scene or add light with flash or constant lights.   Flash photography with night portraits does not require full strobes or expensive gear.  A small flash, often known as a “pocket flash” will be sufficient since your settings are typically a combination of high ISO and low aperture.  In short, a little bit of flash power goes a long way. Ridge Meadows Photography Home Page On a pocket strobe, it’s not uncommon to find your flash power at 1/16, 1/32 or even lower depending on your ISO, Aperture settings, and modifiers.  Without the need for much flash power, you’ll also experience faster recycle times and more flexibility in terms of the modifiers.  You may use soft-boxes, umbrellas, grids, gels, and more.  Or you can keep it simple with a bare flash.  The choice depends on your desired look. If you do not want to use flash, you can also opt for using a constant light like an LED panel.  The adva

Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes. Landscape photography is done for a variety of reasons. Perhaps the most common is to recall a personal observation or experience while in the outdoors, especially when traveling. Others pursue it particularly as an outdoor lifestyle, to be involved with nature and the elements, some as an escape from the artificial world. Authors Photography Home Page     Many landscape photographs show little or no human activity and are created in the pursuit of a pure, unsullied depiction of nature, devoid of human influence—instead featuring subjects such as strongly defined land forms, weather, and ambient light. As with most forms of art, the definition of a landscape photograph is broad and may include rural or urban settings, industrial areas or na

This year brings new challenges, new adventures ( even if spent at home ), new things to be grateful for and a new outlook on the current year. Recently, we saw incredible examples of unity and togetherness, despite so many of us being forced to remain apart. It was also a year of celebrating the small moments and grieving over the larger ones that impacted us most. Now more than ever, it’s important to honor the power and impact of visual storytelling. We were asked to reflect on the past number of months, look through our portfolios and tell our story of with just one photo. Authors Photography Home Page What moments did you document this year? How did your photography change? What’s that one photo and one story that means a lot to you? Check out some of our moments and follow us on our blog.

Great photography has always been about the art and craft of light; about understanding the tools of the photography and using them well; and about perception, lighting and the ability to capture a photograph that catches an audience's attention and communicates a subject. We believe the way to get the best photos from a camera is to do it correctly from the beginning of each session. Yet there is an idea that one does not need to devote much effort when you have the computer to help. This idea has sometimes reached almost unreal proportions. A number of years ago, a digital photography article in a major news magazine said software was available that would automatically transform amateur photos into photographs that would rival the best of a professional photographer. That software never existed, nor will it, because good photography has always been about the art and craft of light; about understanding the tools of the photography and using them well; and about perceptive a photog
